The "desktop metaphor" has been around since the 70s. It was designed to handle small numbers of files by emulating a desk and a filing cabinet. Is it hopelessly out of date? People are suggesting alternatives, eg, Scopeware and Microsoft. Or even Mark Lemmons's Six Degrees.
